Jacksonville Humane Society Jacksonville Humane Society is another good place to obtain a life long pet.  The Humane Society doesn't experience the same overcrowding experienced by ACC, so their animals should be in better condition  
Petfinder Petfinder.com provide for searches by geographical areas to find a pet.  The search includes all of the rescue organizations that use Petfinder.  
Check with either of the above organizations for rescue groups in our area.  Many of the rescue groups obtain their pets from their shelters and can provide excellent socialization for the animals in their care.

One of my favorite organizations is Happy Tails who adopts pets from the Regency Petsmart store every weekend.
